Creating Magic on Nelson Mandela Day
The Magic Circle Crochet Club brought warmth, love and hope to Nelson Mandela Bay, turning 67 minutes of crocheting at the Eleanor Murray Centre into blankets for those who need them most.
At the heart of Nelson Mandela Bay’s festivities, something truly beautiful unfolded at the Eleanor Murray Centre in Algoa.
The Magic Circle Crochet Club brought the community together with warmth, colour and purpose—and the response was extraordinary. Laughter filled the room, hands moved gently through yarn, and people of all ages came together for a fundraiser and community programme that reminded us what Nelson Mandela Bay is made of: compassion.
For 67 minutes, in tribute to Madiba, the members crocheted with love. Every stitch carried a message of hope. Many of the ladies are elderly and living with very little themselves, yet they still gave what they could—their time, their skill, their yarn, and their hearts.
Those small squares of wool became blankets for people who are cold, vulnerable and underprivileged. Blankets made not in a factory, but by people who understand hardship and still choose kindness.
That is the real magic of the Magic Circle Crochet Club: people who may not have much, giving everything they can to help protect someone else from the cold.
The community loved it. The festivities were a great success. But more than that, they left behind something lasting: warmth for bodies, comfort for hearts, and proof that love can be stitched into every blanket.
